SNMP polling
Direct link to topic in this publication:

SNMP Polling is available to users who have installed an OnSight vCollector on their private network and want to monitor SNMP-capable network devices. For instructions on how to set up an OnSight vCollector, click here.

On this page

Add an SNMP metric

To get started with SNMP Polling, perform the following steps:

  1. From the Monitoring Config tab of the network device's Instance Details page, select Add Monitoring > SNMP.
  2. Select Configure Metrics.
  3. Select a model from the SNMP Catalog. You can also use the MIB Browser or, if you know the OID, add the SNMP metric manually.
Information Note: If you do not see your device here or in the MIB Browser, contact support@panopta.com.

Selecting the model type will bring you into the catalog with the OID’s for that device. The list includes the name, OID, and a description of the metric. You can also search for a particular metric with keywords that may be contained in the description or name using the magnifying glass icon at the top right.

  1. Select the metrics to monitor for this device.
Metrics like Admin Status or ifInOctets will expand into a number of individual metrics, based on the number of ports on your device.

Add thresholds

To add a threshold to an SNMP metrics, perform the following steps:

  1. Select the 3-dot menu of the metric then select Edit
  1. From the metric configuration drawer, select the Thresholds tab.
  2. Select + Add threshold.
  3. Configure the following fields:
  • Generate alert when metric is - Set the alert threshold such that if that number is greater than, less than, equal, or not equal to a number you specify for an amount of time that you also specify, an alert will trigger.
  • For more than - Specify a time.
  • Using severity - Select a severity (Critical, Warning).
  • Notify with alert timeline - Select the Create an Alert Timeline
  • Include in availability calculation - Select if you want to include this alert to your server's availability calculation.
  1. Select Save.

Monitor metric performance

In the Performance section of the Instance Details page, each metric is presented differently. Device-level metrics will use performance line charts along the top.

Port/interface-level metrics use a customized roll up display which shows interface stats in expandable rows.

Click on a specific interface/port row to expose all interface specific performance and health metrics. The graphs will show both inbound/outbound stats stacked on the same graph with zooming ability. Click on the expand icon in the upper left-hand corner of a graph to see a full screen display.

Once you have thresholds set and alerts configured, you can use templates to standardize your configuration so you can stamp it out across similar device types.
